Maitake mushrooms, traditionally known as the ”King of mushrooms” has been used for 5000 years in traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its immunostimulatory and anti-cancer effects. It contains complex polysaccharides called beta glucans that increase number and function of macrophages, T cells, B cells, NK cells, phasgocytes and cytokine production. One component Maitake-D-fraction has been extensively studied for its anti-cancer effects. It is currently being studied at M.D. Anderson and Memorial Sloan Kettering for its direct anti-cancer activity and for its ability to preserve and enhance immune function during cancer chemotherapy.
Reishi mushroom, known in TCM as the “mushroom of immortality” has many tonic and beneficial effects that also include immune stimulation, increased resistance to infection and anti-viral effects. It also enhances macrophage, T cell, B cell, NK cell and phogocytic function. Clinical trials in the USA are underway to study its anti-cancer effects.
Trametes (Coriolus) versicolor mushroom also exhibits marked immune stimulation and anti-cancer effects. Extracts of its beta glucans reveal to particular polysaccharides, PSK and PSP that are used clinically in Japan to preserve immune function during cancer therapy, and for their direct anticancer activity against prostate, breast and other cancers.
Cordyceps sinensis is highly prized in TCM where it is “more valuable than gold” for its marked adaptogenic, and immunstimulatory effects. Cordyceps increases strength, stamina, enhances recovery from illness, protects against effect of stress, and enhances overall immune function. It contains a unique component called cordycepin which directly stimulates the immune system, enhances interferon production and has direct antiviral activity. Cordycepin has been shown to inhibit replication of HSV (herpes simplex), influenza, and mosquito-borne Western equine encephalitis viruses.
Elderberry extract is included in Bee Immune Ultra because of its high anti-oxidant anthocyanin content; it’s effect on boosting general immunity by increasing cytokine production; and specifically for its known inhibitory effect on the influenza virus. Elderberry extract has been shown to prevent replication of the influenza virus, and more importantly to prevent the virus from attaching to respiratory cells. By blocking adhesion, it prevents infection or the spread of infection once the virus has been introduced into the body. Clinical trials have documented its effectiveness in preventing infection, and if infected to significantly shorten duration and severity of symptoms.
Astragalus is one of the most important "QI tonifying" herbs in TCM (traditional Chinese medicine). It has been used for centuries to treat chronic illness, debility, weakness and to increase overall vitality. It is a very effective adaptogen. It has been extensively studied for it's immunopotentiating ability. It increases antibody production, enhances macrophage function, increases production of interleukins and tumor necrosis factor, increases T cells and improves T4/T8 ratios, and enhances natural killer cell levels. It has been shown to protect against viral infections, including upper respiratory infections, influenza, and coxsackie infections causing myocarditis. It has also been demonstrated to have anti-bacterial activity against strep, Staph, pneumococcus, dysentery, etc. It has beneficial effects in the treatment of cancer by decreasing the toxicity of chemo therapy and radiation, preventing immune depression by chemo/radiation, enhancing tumor response to treatment increasing survival and tumor response rates, probably by potentiating LAK (lymphokine-activated killer cells)
